Heavy Rainfall Moves Pro Wakeboard Tour to Lake Acworth, Cauble Park

A block party in historic downtown Acworth following the MasterCraft Pro Wakeboard Tour will feature an awards ceremony, live music, outdoor dining and more. The action happens May 17 and 18.

Due to significant recent rainfall and the projected water level of Lake Allatoona in the coming week, the world’s top professional wakeboarders will move to Lake Acworth to open the 22nd season of the MasterCraft Pro Wakeboard Tour. Originally set for Dallas Landing Park, the Friday, May 17, and Saturday, May 18, event now will take place at Lake Acworth Beach at Cauble Park, according to a Pro Wakeboard Tour press release. An estimated 8,000 spectators flocked to Acworth for the 2012 tour stop, but the new venue won't accommodate public access to the water by way of boat. Spectators who planned to enjoy the event by boat on Lake Allatoona are encouraged to line the shores of Lake Acworth Beach—on land—with thousands of other fans to …

Four Cobb County schools finished in the Top 10 in the Class AAAAAA field of the Georgia High School Association boys track and field meet, and five individual athletes earned state titles as the event concluded Saturday in Jefferson.  Rain and winds didn't dash the completion of the three-day-long event as athletes from Cobb, Douglas and Paulding turned in strong showings.  Hillgrove of West Cobb was second in the 6A meet, scoring 43 points. East Cobb's Walton was fourth with 35 points, Campbell of Smyrna was fifth with 25 points and Marietta was 10th with 22.3 points.  Mill Creek of Gwinnett County won the team title with 59 points. Should a Team Be Penalized for an ‘Act of Faith’?

A runner’ gesture cost his high school a trip to the state championships. Tell us if you think the ruling on the gesture was right on, or if the disqualification was unwarranted.

A high school’s chance to compete in the state championships was halted last month despite a winning performance from four of its athletes. Columbus High School saw four of its athletes take first in the 4 x 100-meter relay. But the team was disqualified, according to KHOU 11 News, after its final runner, Derrick Hayes, pointed up to the sky as he crossed the finish line. The DQ was levied as the gesture violated a rule that prohibits excessive acts of celebration, and it cost the school an opportunity to make it to the state championships. Hayes’ father said he believes his son made the gesture to give thanks to God. “It was a reaction,” K.C. Hayes said. “I mean you’re brought up your whole life that God gives you good things, you’re …

Cobb Athletes Win Four State Track Titles

A North Paulding brother duo earned top honors in another field event Thursday.

Patrick Fleming of Pope High School and Tray Oates of Allatoona High School repeated as state champions in the 1,600-meter run and the pole vault, respectively, as the Georgia High School Association boys state track and field meet got underway Thursday in Jefferson. Two other athletes from Cobb schools—Jaylan Reid of Hillgrove High School (shot put) and Joey Connors of Harrison High School (discus)—also won state crowns. While Fleming repeated as 1,600 champion in the second-largest classification—now Class AAAAA—Oates retained his crown by prevailing over a larger group of contenders. Allatoona, which competed in Class AAA last year, moved up to what is now Class AAAAA. Fleming clocked in with a time of 4:15.58, while Oates' winning feat…

Is NCAA Rule Banning Hashtags Too Strict?

College football programs are not allowed to place website addresses or social media messages on the field due to rules that were recently amended by the NCAA. Tell us what you think of the athletic association’s decision.

#GoDawgs or #GoJackets? Whichever your preference, you won’t see either on an NCAA football field this fall. The NCAA’s recent “Bulletin on Field Markings, Uniforms, etc.” expressly prohibits “social media designations such as URL’s and hashtags” (Hashtags are words or phrases that are preceded by the # symbol that can be used online to group messages together or to rally support for a common cause, such as for a favorite team.). The rule means that while you may see your fellow fans using Twitter and other social media platforms while at the game, you won’t see “#SicemDawgs” between the hedges at Sanford Stadium or “#GaTech” on Historic Grant Field in Bobby Dodd Stadium. Speaking of UGA, another Southeastern Conference school, Mississippi…

What Does NBA Player’s Coming Out Mean to You?

Former Atlanta Hawks player Jason Collins, most recently with the Washington Wizards, recently came out as gay. Tell us what impact, if any, you think his announcement will have.

"I'm a 34-year-old NBA center. I'm black. And I'm gay," says Jason Collins in a story set to be published in the May 6 issue of Sports Illustrated. The pro basketball veteran has been a member of six teams in 12 seasons in the league, including three in Atlanta—he last donned a Hawks jersey during the 2011-2012 season. But many are likely to deem his coming out as something bigger than his on-the-court career, as he has become the first male U.S. athlete in a major professional sport to declare that he is gay. "I didn't set out to be the first openly gay athlete playing in a major American team sport. But since I am, I'm happy to start the conversation,” Collins told Sports Illustrated. Collins’ announcement was lauded by several of his …

(Continuing from my previous statement) Homosexuality is considered an acceptable practice by many in our world today - even by some churches. But society does not set the standard for God's law. Christians also need to read Romans chapter 2 about judging. Paul told the Christians "you are just as bad, and you have no excuse!" So, I do not judge but only point out scripture for those who may be …   more ›
