Community Spotlight: 5K Benefit Run for Injured High School Grad [VIDEO]

Join the Lassiter High School community this weekend to support an injured high school student.

This week's Cobb, Douglas and Paulding Weekend & Community Spotlight features the Christopher Heitzman Benefit 5K Run. The event takes place Saturday morning at Lassiter High School, with proceeds to help pay for medical expenses for the injured graduate. Heitzman, who graduated from Lassiter last spring, was seriously injured in a car accident last July on Trickum Road that killed his classmate, Ryan Aschenbach, and injured another recent Lassiter graduate Tyler Seaman. Heitzman sustained a head injury and several broken bones, and will need more surgeries. The fundraiser has collected just under $40,000 from pre-registration, and is hoping to raise more money to help cover Heitzman's medical expenses. Pre-registration for the run is $20 …

Now is the time to find the courage and reach my goals.

There’s no turning back now. I registered online. Last year I wanted to run this particular 5k and when I finally decided to register just days before the run, I got sick. It was a courageous decision then anyway considering I had not really trained and was not in the best shape but I would have had no shame in walking most of it. About a month after the “5k I did not run”, I began a journey to become a lighter, healthier and more active me. I began a weight loss program and exercised for 30 minutes six days a week. I had never been able to withstand more than 5 minutes on an elliptical machine and that was a machine that I wanted to conquer.
