Through Sunday, May 26, Kroger stores throughout the metro Atlanta area are collecting funds to donate to the American Red Cross, which is providing first aid assistance, meals, emotional support and other necessities to people affected by the Oklahoma tornadoes that touched down on Monday. Each item on an inspection form has a point value ranging from 1 to 9 points, with violations deducting points from a best possible score of 100. A sample inspection form is attached. Higher points are taken for items with higher risk to cause illness, while repeat violations take even more points. Customers will be able to shop, order products from sears.com and pick up their goods, shipped for free, at the Nelson Street location.
Former catalogue giant Sears is coming to a town near you, Acworth. The Sears Hometown Store at 206 Nelson Street in the Cartersville Plaza is set to open May 9, owner Steve Allebone of Marietta told Patch. It's one of more than 900 Sears Hometown Stores across the country, which are locally owned and operated, and carry all of the top 10 home appliance brands, according to searshometownstores.com. Family Dollar is planning to open a second Acworth store this summer. Acworth Patch Facebook fan Dawn Conrad told us about the construction on Baker Road, and Family Dollar spokeswoman Bryn R. Winburn confirmed the chain is building an 8,000-square foot store. Acworth has a Family Dollar Store on Bells Ferry Road, but the store at 3454 Baker Road is slated to open sometime this summer, Winburn said. It will employ eight to 10 workers, and "we look to hire from within the communities we serve," she added. A new National Taxpayer Advocate study shows this city has some of the largest clusters of potential tax cheats in the country.
If you're a small business owner in Acworth, you may be more likely to be audited. The Internal Revenue Service has identified this city as having some of the biggest concentrations of potential tax cheats in the country. Gaining access to 2009 data in a effort to determine why some taxpayers are more likely to cheat, the Taxpayer Advocate, an independent IRS office, used confidential tax returns to identify clusters of possible cheats in more than 350 communities, the Associated Press reports. The IRS uses the data to target taxpayers for audits, assigning scores to each tax return that indicate the likelihood agents would collect additional money as the result of an audit. The 2012 Taste of Acworth, organized by the Acworth Business Association, will be held on Saturday, Oct. 13 on Main Street in Historic Downtown Acworth.
