Although Acworth is Cobb's fastest growing city, Mayor Tommy Allegood and his staff aren't done improving the city's "Quality of Life."
Mayor Tommy Allegood shared his plans for a booming Acworth during a town hall presentation at the City Hall Wednesday evening. Meeting Room One was full of interested citizens, including representatives of several homeowners' associations, who arrived in advance of Allegood's PowerPoint presentation. In addition, many city aldermen and the heads of various city departments were in attendance. The department heads all had tables set up along the walls of the meeting room, allowing for citizens to interact with the city employees directly and ask questions they may have. “It gets citizens involved,” said City Treasurer Sharron Burtz. “The HOA people here can relate what they saw to their members. Being out here helps put a face to the voice…

The six new cars and trucks will cost around $230,000.
The City of Acworth Police Department will be getting six new vehicles to assist their war on crime, a result of the passage of the consent agenda at the Mayor and Board of Aldermen meeting Thursday evening. Roughly $230,000 will be spent to acquire and outfit four Chevrolet Caprice patrol vehicles and two Chevrolet Equinox vehicles for the Criminal Investigation Division. Police Chief Michael Wilkie said he expected to call Day's Chevrolet at 8 a.m. Friday to enter the order. “The Criminal Investigations guys are really excited,” said Wilkie. “In most police departments, that group gets the hand me down vehicles.” Wilkie went on to say that the division had been getting by using older vehicles, but expected that the new Equinoxes would …

The continuation of the SPLOST-funded initiative was just one of the many items addressed by the mayor and Board of Aldermen.
Another portion of Bell Street is being closed and abandoned, a result of a decision made by the mayor and Acworth Board of Aldermen at their Thursday night meeting. “Right now, you can only get one car down it,” City Manager Brian Bulthuis said. “It's basically an alley.” The now-abandoned portion of Bell Street will be converted to use for pedestrians, with a 5-foot-wide sidewalk going down the center of the former road. For residents of houses along Bell Street who will be losing their access to the street grid, the city has deeded them the appropriate abandoned portions of Bell Street so they will still have driveways. This change, which is part of the larger School Street project, was one of many items of business handled by the board…

Thursday's city council meeting lasted ten minutes but accomplished much.
Three Acworth aldermen announced their candidacies for re-election at the Nov. 8 general election during Thursday evening's meeting of the Mayor and Board of Aldermen. Aldermen Bob Weatherford, Gene Pugliese, and Butch Price all announced that they will stand for re-election in their respective posts. “I've been proud to serve the city for the last ten years,” Weatherford said. Price said that he would retire after his next term of office expired. Although it seems that some of the candidates will run unopposed, Weatherford will be running against Brett North in Post 3. Weatherford smiled at North as he announced his candidacy during the public comment session at the end of the meeting. North ran against and lost to Gene Pugliese in Post 2…

The Mayor and Board of Aldermen make up for time lost due to the Fourth of July holiday.
Plans to abandon a part of Bell Street as part of the School Street development project were put on hold after a citizen requested additional access to the street during Thursday's City of Acworth Mayor and Board of Aldermen meeting. Walter Blaylock, of 4398 Northside Dr., would lose vehicle access to his backyard if the proposed closures were enacted. Assistant City Manager Brandon Douglas and the rest of the Board of Aldermen decided to delay approval of the road closure, which would have occurred during the meeting, and consult with Blaylock to address the issue. As a result, the new closures will be advertised for a period of four weeks before they are voted on during another city council meeting. The project is intended to turn parts …
