Marine Cpl. Todd Love climbed into a Bob Cat earth digger Thursday and broke ground on his future new home in Douglasville. It might not be such an extraordinary story except that the Acworth native lost both of his legs and left arm after he triggered an IED while on foot patrol in Afghanistan on the morning of Oct. 25, 2010. The Tunnel to Towers Foundation and the Gary Sinise Foundation have partnered through their “Building for America’s Bravest” program to build Love his new “Smart Home” in Douglasville. As a major sponsor, the Home Depot Foundation has committed $200,000 to assist in building Love’s House. Army First Lt. Jonathan Walsh was killed while leading his platoon on patrol in southern Afghanistan on April 22.
Veterans Day isn't until Sunday, but Kennesaw State University’s Army ROTC cadets will observe it today with two events. The first, a tree-planting ceremony in memory of Army First Lt. Jonathan Walsh, begins at 11:45 a.m. on the campus green in front of KSU Hall. Walsh, a 2008 graduate of KSU's Coles College of Business, was killed April 22 in a blast from an improvised explosive device in Ghazni province, Afghanistan. He was the first alum killed while serving in the military. Walsh's family will participate in the ceremony. The second event, a keynote address from Maj. Stefan W. The 5-year-old boy had not seen his dad in a year.
Five-year-old Xavier Sanders got a surprise before the start of Saturday's Blackwell Bears homecoming game. His dad, Staff Sgt. Kelvin Sanders, walked onto the field at Noonday Park, according to 11Alive. Father and son had not seen each other in a year. Hundreds of cheering family members welcomed 58 soldiers of the Georgia Army National Guard’s Agribusiness Development Team 1 (ADT-1) home from Logar Province, Afghanistan. Maj. Gen. Jim Butterworth, Georgia’s Adjutant General, was present to welcome the soldiers home at Fort Gordon in Augusta. “It is because of soldiers like this, families like this, that the Georgia Guard can accomplish its mission,” Butterworth said. ADT-1 is composed of soldiers from 48 cities and 33 counties in Georgia and North Carolina. For 12 months, the team worked with Afghan farmers to help improve agricultural practices and provide a better quality of life for the Afghan people. Among the 58 soldiers in ADT-1 was Sgt. Georgia Army National Guardsman Lt. Col. Erik Andersen, a member of the 648th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade of Columbus, was promoted on March 10 from Major to Lieutenant Colonel while deployed in Kabul, Afghanistan. Andersen, an Acworth resident, was joined during the ceremony via FaceTime by his two young daughters McKayla and Gabrielle and wife Pamela. Traditionally, military families are asked to participate in promotion ceremonies by pinning new rank on their soldier. In their Acworth home, Mrs. Andersen hung his dress uniform with their daughters replacing his old rank with the new rank. Col. Andy L. Frey Elementary School gave a hero's welcome to Lt. Cameron West, a wounded Marine born and raised in Acworth.

Hundreds of students, teachers and parents at Frey Elementary School welcomed Lt. Cameron West, a wounded Marine and Frey alumnus, with a "Walk of Honor." West is an Acworth native who graduated from Frey 15 years ago and attended Harrison High School. Frey Elementary adopted West's platoon last year and began to send care packages to Afghanistan, where he was deployed. West had promised he would return to Frey after the war to thank the students in person. But shortly after, West was injured in an IED explosion in October 2010. Family, friends and community members are thrilled to have Marine Cpl. Todd Love back.
Marine Cpl. Todd Love knew there were people waiting for him at the McCollum Airport in Kennesaw and back home in Acworth, but he had no idea there were hundreds of them. A large crowd of people cheered and waved their flags as Marine Cpl. Todd Love’s plane landed at McCollum Airport in Kennesaw Saturday afternoon. Many burst into tears as they hugged their hero. Love is an Acworth native and a Recon Marine, who lost both legs and his left arm from an IED explosion in October 2010. Family, friends, local law enforcement and military support groups escorted Love through the downtown areas of Kennesaw and Acworth to Dallas Landing Park, where the homecoming ceremony was held.
