Another Allatoona student was recognized, too.
Allatoona High School students took two of the three top spots in the Taste of Kennesaw, a competition that inspires students to pursue their dreams of becoming a chef or owning their own restaurant. First place went to Deja Simon, who plans to attend Fort Valley State University in the fall. Simon won a $3,000 scholarship. Dallas Chapman, who will attend the Art Institute of Atlanta, was the third place winner. Zachary Burris of Kennesaw Mountain High School received second place honors, and plans to enlist in the Army as a food specialist. Carrabba's Italian Grill donated $2,000 toward Simon's scholarship. The three-day state meet concluded Saturday in Albany.
Athletes in 10 events who represented Cobb, Douglas and Paulding schools brought back first-place medals from the Georgia High School Association girls state track and field championships in Albany. Two teams also peformed well in the event, which ran from Thursday through Saturday, as Kell High School finished second in the Class 5A meet and Marietta came in third in Class 6A. Kell's Kendell Williams closed out her illustrious career with three titles, winning the 5A high jump, long jump and 100-meter hurdles. She earned 11 crowns in her high school career, and on Friday broke her own state record in the long jump. State playoff action continued Tuesday in baseball, soccer, lacrosse and tennis.

The Allatoona and Lassiter boys and Walton and Kell girls are among the favorites as action starts Tuesday.
Even though lacrosse has only two classifications, Cobb teams can be found everywhere in the Georgia High School Association tournaments that begin Tuesday on campus sites. A total of 17 teams from Cobb schools—eight girls and nine boys—have qualified. The girls get underway on Tuesday, with three Cobb teams playing host. Walton, No. 3 in Class 6A, is at home to North Gwinnett. No. 7 Kennesaw Mountain entertains Chattahoochee and Alpharetta is at Harrison. Hitting the road will be No. 8 Lassiter, which plays at Peachtree Ridge, and Hillgrove, which travels to West Forsyth. A North Paulding brother duo earned top honors in another field event Thursday.
Patrick Fleming of Pope High School and Tray Oates of Allatoona High School repeated as state champions in the 1,600-meter run and the pole vault, respectively, as the Georgia High School Association boys state track and field meet got underway Thursday in Jefferson. Two other athletes from Cobb schools—Jaylan Reid of Hillgrove High School (shot put) and Joey Connors of Harrison High School (discus)—also won state crowns. While Fleming repeated as 1,600 champion in the second-largest classification—now Class AAAAA—Oates retained his crown by prevailing over a larger group of contenders. Three Allatoona High lacrosse players have inked college scholarship offers. Sean Siemen signed a scholarship to play at Young Harris College. Cody Sorrells will play at Berry College. And Ryan Tesler signed with Ferum College, Allatoona athletic director Benji Morrell said. He shared photos of the moment with Acworth Patch.
