Allatoona Coach Is Student of Game

Markus Hood just celebrated his 200th basketball win.

Allatoona High School head basketball coach, Markus Hood, says he thinks the secret to a good team is chemistry and selflessness. “They have to care about each other more than they care about themselves,” said Hood on a recent rainy afternoon in his office. His belief in those ingredients has served him well through the years. Hood recently won his 200th game. And the Allatoona Buccaneers advanced Wednesday to the state tournament with a 60 to 37 win over Ringgold High School. This year, the team has six seniors that have gone to school at Allatoona all four years. The school didn’t open until 2008. Hood says his seniors, some of whom will go on to college ball, have set high standards for the younger players. They all genuinely care about…

Allatoona Loses in Overtime

The Buccaneer boys basketball team loses its last two games in the Lake City Classic Basketball Tournament.

The Allatoona High School boys basketball team had plenty of excuses it could’ve relied upon for failing to hold an early 14-2 first-quarter lead against Mays Friday afternoon. One of those excuses could’ve been fatigue from its 57-42 loss against Carrollton Thursday in a game that didn’t end until 10:30 p.m., and then having to come back to play at 2:30 p.m. in a game that decided the third-place finisher for the Lake City Classic Basketball Tournament. But fourth-year Buccaneer coach Markus Hood refused to use such excuses after the tough 61-59 overtime loss. He instead pointed out Allatoona (9-4) hitting only 6-of-19 free throws for the game, including 2 of 10 in the fourth and overtime periods combined. He also noted losing a 33-20 …

Unbeaten Carrollton Downs Allatoona

The Allatoona boys basketball team will play for third-place a 2:30 p.m. today against Mays in the last day of the Lake City Classic tournament.

An uncharacteristic shaky and sloppy start doomed Allatoona High School’s boys basketball team in its semifinal game against unbeaten Carrollton late Thursday night in the Lake City Classic Basketball Tournament at Allatoona. The now 9-0 Trojans grabbed a 14-5 first-quarter lead and never looked back before posting a 57-42 win. The loss dropped Allatoona (9-3) into the third-place game against Mays (2-7) at 2:30 p.m. today. “Offensively, we rushed things too much and had a lot of turnovers,” said Buccaneer senior Dimychael Ross, who scored13 points. “We just didn’t go for the offensive rebounds when we put shots up. “Mentally, we didn’t prepare ourselves for the game,” he continued. “We’ve been playing a lot of ball lately and I think we’…

Buccaneer Girls Dismantle South Atlanta

Allatoona High School’s girls basketball team will play Archer in tonight’s championship Lake City Classic Basketball Tournament.

The semifinal game turned ugly quickly. Riding an 18-5 first-quarter lead, Allatoona High School’s girls basketball team rolled to a 43-23 victory over South Atlanta Thursday night to advance to the championship game of its 2nd annual Lake City Classic Basketball Tournament. The Buccaneers – a school-best 11-1 – will play Archer (8-3) at 7 p.m. today. The Tigers advanced by beating Drew 55-51 Thursday and opened the tourney by downing South Paulding 42-19 Wednesday. Allatoona junior guard Elise Spann led the Buccaneers in their first quarter scoring outburst with 13 of her game-high 19 points coming in the first half. She also drained three 3-pointers before halftime. Spann and teammate Alexis Ezell turned the first quarter into a scoring …
