Hawks Legend Dominique Wilkins and Harry the Hawk celebrated the opening of the new Reading and Learning Zone with the Acworth community.

Former Atlanta Hawks All-Star Dominique Wilkins along with Harry the Hawk came to Acworth Thursday and celebrated the opening of the new Reading and Learning Zone with Acworth youths and the community. Last month, the Atlanta Hawks selected the Acworth Achievers Mentoring and After School Program as the winner of this year’s $10,000 Atlanta Hawks Reading and Learning Zone Makeover, sponsored by Philips as part of the Hawks Read to Achieve program. The new Reading and Learning Zone at the Roberts School Community Education Center includes new books, an upgrade to the interior finishes and furniture decorated with Hawks Branding and décor in an effort to make the new space a fun, motivational and valuable environment for Acworth students. …

Acworth Achievers Win $15,000 from Atlanta Hawks

The Acworth after school program is the winner of the 2012 Atlanta Hawks Reading and Learning Zone Makeover.

The Atlanta Hawks have announced Acworth Achievers Mentoring and After School Program as the winner of this year’s $15,000 Atlanta Hawks Reading and Learning Zone Makeover, sponsored by Philips as part of the Hawks Read to Achieve program. Construction on the space will begin this month, with completion slated for mid-August as school resumes. “The Atlanta Hawks Reading and Learning Zone grant is a way for us to transform centers of learning and strengthen our commitment to education in communities where our fans live, work and play,” said Bob Williams, President of Atlanta Hawks and Philips Arena. “It is gratifying to be able to provide the opportunity for our young people to get excited about learning in a brand new, uniquely designed …

Atlanta Hawks Basketball Camp Coming to Acworth

The camp is for boys and girls ages 7-16.

The Atlanta Hawks Summer Basketball Camp will make a stop at Allatoona High School, June 11–15 from 9 a.m.- 4 p.m. The camps are open to boys and girls ages 7-16, and, according to the Hawks' release, "offer a high-energy opportunity for young players and fans to improve their skills, play the game, meet friends and have fun." Features of the camps include Atlanta Hawks guests and trainers, a 2012-13 regular season Hawks game ticket and Hawks gear, the organization said. The cost for each camp is $200. Acworth Kids Could Be Rewarded for Summer Reading

Kids can score tickets to cheer on the Hawks or dance with the Wiggles for reading books this summer.

The Acworth Public Library and the county’s other 16 libraries are giving a free ticket to a regular season 2011-2012 Atlanta Hawks home game for every student who reads at least five books this summer. This is the county library system’s seventh annual Atlanta Hawks “Check It Out Reading Challenge,” running now through August 19, the last day to register for the Reading Challenge, for students of all ages from grades K-12. After the students read the selected books, they can visit www.checkitoutreading.com to register for the program.
