Cobb firefighters will be at businesses throughout the county on May 4, 11 and 18—the first three Fridays of the month—as part of the Give Burns the Boot annual fundraiser. They'll be collecting money for the Georgia Firefighters Burn Foundation and a camp for children with burn injuries. A 16-month-old boy suffered a severe head injury after a possible 10-foot fall from the second floor inside an Acworth home on Terrace Drive on Tuesday night, according to the Acworth Police Department. Acworth police said the child's parents were at home when the incident happened. They found the child on the first floor and called 911. Cobb Fire and Emergency Services responded to the scene to treat the toddler, who was conscious and moving when officers arrived. A helicopter flew the boy to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite in Sandy Springs. Authorities said the toddler is in critical but stable condition as of Wednesday afternoon. The case is being treated as an accident pending further investigation.

In the last few years Cobb County has tried to save money anywhere it could. Due to these budget constraints, available funding for contracted shoulder maintenance, median mowing and street sweeping services has been significantly reduced, according to Faye DiMassimo, director of transportation. The fiscal year budget for these services is $233,000, which represents a 78 percent decrease from 2009. Because of this, the intervals between mowing and maintenance have been significantly lengthened. In 2010, the services were re-assigned to road maintenance crews in-house. But it is too much for them to handle so the commissioners are being asked to approve 14 part-time, seasonal workers for the job. Salaries and equipment comes to $176,000. In…
