That's two-tenths of a percentage point higher than the rate in December 2012.
Cobb's unemployment rate rose from 7.6 percent in December 2012 to 7.8 percent in January 2013, according to new figures from the Georgia Department of Labor. The rise in Cobb mirrors an uptick in metro Atlanta, where the unemployment rate rose from 8.4 percent in December to 8.7 percent in January. The Labor Department attributes the increase to a loss of seasonal jobs and an increase in new layoffs. While there were 2,392,000 jobs in December, there were 2,362,900 million jobs remaining in January. As a result, the number of initial claims for unemployment insurance benefits rose from 21,912 in December to 31,663 in January. Most of the claims were filed in construction, manufacturing, trade, transportation and warehousing, …

That mirrors declines countywide and across metro Atlanta.
The August jobs report is out, and preliminary figures from the Georgia Department of Labor show a dip in Cobb County's jobless rate. Cobb's rate dropped from a revised 8.5 percent in July to 8.1 percent in August. And thanks to fewer layoffs in manufacturing, construction, administrative and support services, educational services, and health care and social assistance, the 28-county metro Atlanta area's jobless rate fell from a revised 9.2 percent in July to 8.9 percent in August, the Georgia Department of Labor said in a news release. Of the 10 counties within the Atlanta Regional Commission, Cobb ranks fourth, behind Cherokee (7.1 percent), Fayette (7.8 percent) and Gwinnett (7.9 percent). July unemployment claims in Cobb County also increased by 4.5 percent.
The jobless rate in Georgia has jumped 3 tenths of a percentage point to 9.3 percent from June to July, says the Georgia Department of Labor. State Labor Commissioner Mark Butler said in a press release that the culprit for the spike was a large number of temporary manufacturing sector layoffs, but many of those workers have returned to work already. First time claims for unemployment insurance jumped by over 15 percent from June, but are still 8.2 percent below the number of claims from this time last year. In Cobb County, there was a 4.5 percent increase in first-time unemployment claims. There were 2,515 first time claims in July, up from 2,406 in June. This number is still below the 2,816 first time claims in July, 2011. Additionally, …

The Georgia Department of Labor announced today that Georgia’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate increased to 9.0 percent in June, up one-tenth of a percentage point from 8.9 percent in May, the first increase in almost a year. The jobless rate was 9.9 percent in June a year ago. “The unemployment rate traditionally inches up in June because new graduates and people hunting summer jobs enter the job market at the same time the private and public schools are laying off for the summer,” said State Labor Commissioner Mark Butler. The number of jobs dropped by 8,200, or two-tenths of a percentage point, from 3,941,500 in May to 3,933,300 in June. “The June job loss is a lot less than we anticipated, based on recent trends,” said Butler, “…
