Local cops and narcotics agents arrested five people Thursday, including four they say were in the middle of a drug deal during the Cartersville Christmas parade. Sheriff Clark Millsap said in a release that Bartow County Sheriff’s Office deputies conducting a safety check at Groovers Landing and Tanyard Creek in Acworth, first arrested William Clay Hicks, who allegedly was in possession of about an ounce of methamphetamine, marijuana, packaging materials, a large sum of money believed to be proceeds of drug sales and a rifle. He was arrested and taken to jail. The DEA drug case 'Freak Nasty' knocks out a Mexican-based drug cell with a case that started locally and stretched as far as Mexico, Ecuador and Peru.
What started as a local drug street case, ultimately reached into Mexico, Ecuador and Peru. Four Acworth residents are among seven people arrested in connection with a series of drug raids the Cherokee Multi-Agency Narcotics Squad carried out the past few days. CMANS seized meth and cocaine worth $266,500 in busting a drug ring based in Woodstock that reached into Cobb County, Phil Price, the commander of the drug task force, said in a news release this afternoon. “This is the fourth major drug trafficking organization we have dismantled in the last year,” Price said. “We will not allow Cherokee County to become a haven for drug traffickers.” The Acworth residents arrested are Shawna Rogers, 22, Victor Perez Valle, 28, Jose De Jesus Lopez-Benitez, 25, and Jonathan Scott, 30. Eleven defendants, most from North Georgia, were indicted by a federal grand jury this week and charged with trafficking oxycodone and other prescription drugs in an operation that spanned a wide swath of the state. The case comes about amid intensified efforts to address Georgia's growing problem with prescription drug abuse. The eleven Georgia citizens (see list below) indicted this week face charges of conspiring to forge oxycodone prescriptions and trafficking in the illegally obtained oxycodone tablets. Two of the defendants are from Acworth. In March, law enforcement leaders, plus academics and medical professionals met in a summit at Georgia State University to address the growing problem.
