Dear Editor: Four children tragically lost their lives in a Conyers fire on Jan. 8. Despite a quick response from first responders the home was fully engulfed in flames when emergency personnel arrived. Courageous rescue efforts were made but sadly the children aged 9, 7, 3 and eight months did not survive the terrible blaze. The children’s mother desperately tried to save her children but was burned severely and was only able to rescue her 6-year-old son. Reports show that the home did not have working smoke detectors according to fire officials. In a similarly devastating story, a man and his four children aged 5, 4, 2 and 6 months perished in a fire in Pike County, KY, on the same night. These tragedies unfortunately happen far too …

The annual statewide ban on open burning begins today. The ban is issued by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and affects 54 counties in Georgia, including the city of Acworth and all of Cobb County. The bodies were found after a house fire early Sunday.

Officers and Cobb County firefighters responded to a 911 call regarding a house fire at approximately 12:30 a.m. Sunday and discovered the bodies inside the home on North Bend Way just off Acworth Due West Road, Acworth police said. Medical examinations suggest that Shawn Hutcheson, 42, and his mother, Dianne Hutcheson, 64, both died from gunshot wounds, Acworth Police Chief Michael Wilkie said. Wilkie said initial investigations indicate that the mother shot her son, then set the house on fire and took her own life. The case remains under investigation. Anyone with information regarding the case is asked …

The holiday season is in full swing, which means early morning shopping sprees, bundling up for cold weather and decorating your home to get into the full spirit. Those blazes killed an average of 14 people and caused $13.8 million in property damage yearly. Dennis Rucker, the public fire and life safety specialist with the Cobb County Fire Department, offers some useful tips that will make your house safer for the holidays, starting with the tree. If you're using a real Christmas tree, Rucker …
