The Georgia Department of Labor announced Thursday that metro Atlanta’s unemployment rate declined to 7.9 percent in March from 8.3 percent in February. The rate was 8.9 percent in March a year ago. The rate declined because of an increase in the number of jobs and fewer new layoffs. State Unemployment Rate Drops as Fewer File Claims

More jobs and fewer layoffs in most metro Atlanta counties helped push the state's unemployment rate down to 8.4 percent, it's lowest since December 2008.

The Georgia Department of Labor announced today that Georgia’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate dipped to 8.4 percent in March, the lowest rate since December 2008. The rate declined from 8.6 percent in February because of an increase in the number of jobs and fewer new layoffs. The rate was down from 9.1 percent in March a year ago. “Georgia employers created 23,700 jobs last month, which is one of the best job growth numbers we’ve had in March for almost a decade,” said State Labor Commissioner Mark Butler. “The growth was in several industries, led by leisure and hospitality and professional and business services.” Additional growth came in trade, transportation and warehousing, construction and local government. Cobb Unemployment: 7.8% in Jan.

That's two-tenths of a percentage point higher than the rate in December 2012.

Cobb's unemployment rate rose from 7.6 percent in December 2012 to 7.8 percent in January 2013, according to new figures from the Georgia Department of Labor. The rise in Cobb mirrors an uptick in metro Atlanta, where the unemployment rate rose from 8.4 percent in December to 8.7 percent in January. The Labor Department attributes the increase to a loss of seasonal jobs and an increase in new layoffs. While there were 2,392,000 jobs in December, there were 2,362,900 million jobs remaining in January. As a result, the number of initial claims for unemployment insurance benefits rose from 21,912 in December to 31,663 in January. No Change in Georgia’s Unemployment Rate

The January 2013 rate was the same as the December 2012 rate.

The rate was 9.3 percent in January a year ago. There was a loss of 47,700 mostly seasonal jobs and an increase in initial claims for unemployment insurance benefits over the month, but the increases were not enough to impact the unemployment rate. “The good news in this report is that we lost the fewest jobs for January since 1987,” said State Labor Commissioner Mark Butler. “And, we start the year with 79,600 more jobs in January than we had in the same period a year ago.” The number of jobs increased to 3,956,300 from 3,876,700 in January 2012.
