Allatoona Basketball Teams Lead Strong Tourney

Sixteen teams will compete in the second Lake City Classic Basketball Tournament, which begins at 10 a.m. today.

Allatoona High School’s boys and girls basketball teams are each off to strong starts this season. Both Buccaneers squads should vie for the championship when they host the three-day second annual Lake City Classic Basketball Tournament at Allatoona. Today’s opening round games are: The tournament continues with games Thursday and Friday. “I really think the (boys) tournament is really up for grabs, whoever gets hot and can string (together) three games in a row … and there’s any team that can do that,” fourth-year Allatoona boys coach Markus Hood said. “We think we have one of the best basketball tournaments around because of the teams we have here.” Hood said South Cobb and Hillgrove are two of the best teams around and that Douglas …

Hillgrove Girls Win Lake City Classic Basketball Tournament

Larryqua Hall scored 19 points and took home Tournament MVP honors.

The Hillgrove girls basketball team jumped out on a 7-0 run to start the championship game at the Lake City Classic at Allatoona High School on Thursday. After giving up two free throws they scored the next eight points and never looked back, beating Allatoona 83-44. The flurry of scoring happened quickly as Hillgrove outscored Allatoona 23-4 in the first quarter, led by senior guard Larryqua Hall and her six first-quarter points. But it was also a balanced attack. Eight players scored in the opening quarter, including 6-foot-1 inch freshman Mackenzie Engram, who added four points and a height advantage that haunted Allatoona. "This is the first year we've had a little height," said Hillgrove head coach Sheryl Fowler. "But it's nice. We've…

Hillgrove Boys Overcome Pressure, Beat Lithia Springs

Uptempo basketball action was just fine for Hillgrove, after they got aggressive.

The Hillgrove boys basketball team knew exactly what they were getting into when they saw Lithia Springs on the docket for Thursday's Day 3 game at the Lake City Classic at Allatoona High School. Lithia Springs likes to run and pressure for the entire game, making it easier for them to control every aspect of play. But it was Hillgrove that set the tone, winning 59-45. Hillgrove had a tough time in transition to start the game. Lithia Springs' full-court press was befuddling, to say the least. On three consecutive possessions, Hillgrove turned the ball over and started the game in a hole. After only scoring nine points in the first quarter, Hillgrove opened up for 17 in the second quarter and took a 26-22 lead into halftime as they began …

Hillgrove Girls Remain Unbeaten with 64-39 Win Over Chestatee

The victory puts the Hawks in the finals of the Lake City Classic at Allatoona High School.

Through two games in the Lake City Classic at Allatoona High School, the Hillgrove Hawks' biggest challenges have been getting everyone on the team equal time on the floor and not getting bored with their lack of competition. The Hawks' romp through the holiday tournament continued Wednesday when they trounced Chestatee 64-39. At halftime the unbeaten Hawks were up by 23 points. Two minutes into the third quarter the lead was 30 points. That's when Hillgrove head coach Sheryl Fowler began focusing on the finer points of her team's progress. "We give our second group as much playing time as we can, and then we want to make sure we do the little things like boxing out, those kinds of things, and don't get sloppy," she said of her big-lead …

Hawks Can't Hold Double-Digit Lead in Loss to North Clayton

Full-court pressure causes a second-half swoon and keeps Hillgrove from the Lake City Classic boys championship game.

North Clayton junior Marcus Hunt scored 17 of his game-high 25 points in the second half as Hillgrove coughed up an 11-point third-quarter lead and lost 60-52. Hunt was the main beneficiary of a frenzied full-court press that sparked a 26-7 North Clayton run and eliminated the Hawks' hopes of winning the Lake City Classic championship at Allatoona High School. The run was aided by what Hillgrove head coach Edward Morris perceived as a lack of consistency from the game's referees. "I'm not going to blame the officials, but in the first half they called everything when they put their hands on us," he said. "We didn't get any of those calls in the second half. We just have to learn to play through that, and we didn't do that. We turned the …
