Shop around for "Clearance Auto" online. Instead of just renewing, study the fine print of your policy to see if its terms -- or your situation -- have changed. Another company might have better rates, but you won't know unless you shop.   more ›

Acworth Man Guides Golden Army

Lindsey Turner's Golden Soldiers organization wields the Golden Rule to fight for a better world.

That Golden Rule is what drives the founder of Golden Soldiers, Lindsey Turner of Acworth, who started the organization based on the need to take care of one another. “It’s not about a certain religion or one concept,” said Turner, 32. “It’s about needing something like this in our world today.” Golden Soldiers holds several events in and around Acworth, including mentoring at the Horizon Field for special-needs children on Saturdays for baseball games. The next game is this Saturday at 9 a.m. at Kennworth Park in Acworth. Golden Soldiers also rents out movie theaters and invites families with special-needs children to enjoy a sensory-friendly movie together. “Sitting through a two-hour movie can be challenging for those families,” Turner …

'Covering the Bases' Honored by City

The City of Acworth Mayor and Board of Aldermen praised the efforts of the fundraising committees and the generosity of the citizenry.

The Mayor and Board of Aldermen of the City of Acworth made five presentations to organizations involved with a recent fundraiser and recognized Breast Cancer Awareness Month at their meeting Thursday evening. The “Covering the Bases” fundraising event helped the city's Horizon Field and Horizon League, a sports complex and sports league built with special needs children in mind (here's an example of the impact the field has had). The Acworth Police Department has been the chief fundraisers for the event, which has gone on for four years. This year's fundraiser lasted a full 24 hours (Sept. 24–25), and included people walking the bases of Horizon Field for the duration of the event. In addition, the “Ride for the Horizon” and “Shoot for …

Boy in Wheelchair Walks on Horizon Field for First Time

Justin Millwood's been in a wheelchair since he was born. On Saturday, he was able to walk the bases for the very first time.

Justin Millwood, a little boy from Acworth, has been in a wheelchair since the day he was born. Justin is a member of the Horizon League, and has played baseball on the special-needs Horizon Field in his wheelchair for four years. On Saturday, Oct. 15, the boy got to walk the bases of the field on his own feet, for the very first time. Family and community members stood by his side and cheer for him. It was a day Justin's dream came true, on Acworth's own "Field of Dreams". Earlier in September, the Annual Covering the Bases fundraiser took place on the Horizon Field, with thousands volunteering and joining the effort in supporting special needs children and youths. What would you like to say to Justin and his family? Share in the comments…

Video: Police and Community Covering the Bases for Special Needs

A 24-hour fundraiser to support special needs children and young adults took place at the Horizon Field in Acworth over the weekend.

The Horizon Field in Acworth was packed over the weekend with children and teens who are excited to start the fall baseball season, and thousands who came to participate in the Covering the Bases fundraiser. The 24-hour fundraiser hosted by the Acworth Police Department included baseball games, concerts, and dance performances, and hundreds of people continued walking the bases through the night. This year’s event attracted more than 50 local and national sponsors. Some community members also started their own fundraising efforts to help maximize the amount of donations. Covering the Bases helped raise more than $64,000 in the past three years for special needs children and young adults participating in the Horizon League.

Horizon League Participants Meet Pro Wakeboarders

A group of special needs children and community members received rock star treatment from professional wakeboard riders.

Wakeboarders might have taken the spotlight during the MasterCraft Pro Wakeboard Tour in Acworth this week. But on Thursday evening, a group of local fans was the focus of attention during a two-hour special event held at Dallas Landing Park. Riders took a break from the competition, and spent some time with special needs children and community members who are participants in the Acworth Horizon Baseball League. They signed autographs, gave away T-shirts and other goodies, and took some kids and their parents on a wakeboarding boat ride. It was the first time for the Horizon League participants to get an up-close look at this fast-paced and action-packed water sport. The children enjoyed the exciting boat ride alongside their parents while…
