Nearly one year after Cobb County enrolled in a program intended to stop undocumented workers from obtaining employment through fraudulent means, Acworth is poised to become the first city in Cobb to take the same step. Acworth Mayor Tommy Allegood told the Marietta Daily Journal that the city is signing up for the ICE (U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement) Mutual Agreement between Government and Employers program, commonly referred to as IMAGE. “I think it’s important,” he told the MDJ. “If you really understand this IMAGE program, it’s really a self audit, it’s voluntary, and it basically helps to ensure the fact that you are compliant and that your folks who are working for us are legal.” During Thursday's Acworth Board of Aldermen …

Day's Chevrolet Redevelopment to Begin in January

A senior assisted living community will take its place.

It's a question that Acworth Mayor Tommy Allegood said the city gets a lot. When will the old Day's Chevrolet Property on South Main Street be redeveloped? "Everybody always wants to know about that," he told a crowd at Thursday's town hall meeting at City Hall. Allegood has an answer. "We talked to the developer," he said. "He called to tell us to go ahead and release that in January, they are actually going to begin construction." In 2006, when the Board of Aldermen approved the city's 2006-2026 comprehensive plan, the property was described as one of two sections on Main Street "requiring special attention. "These two sections are located along the north-south gateways and should serve as notice to travelers that they are entering …

Decision on School Street Crossing Coming

"We're getting pressure from the DOT" to close it, Mayor Tommy Allegood said during Wednesday's town hall meeting with residents.

Within 30 days, Acworth will decide if it will follow the recommendations of CSX and the Georgia Department of Transportation and close the School Street railroad crossing, Mayor Tommy Allegood said during Wednesday's town hall meeting with residents. "The DOT has given us a really bad grade," he told the crowd assembled inside City Hall. "Of course, anybody that drives over that thing knows that it's not safe." In February 2010, a U.S. Food Service driver abandoned his semi when the tractor-trailer got stuck on the tracks. An oncoming CSX train pushed the truck at least 40 yards down the tracks, according to the Marietta Daily Journal. One woman at Wednesday's meeting said she had a close call of her own when her car got stuck on the …
