New Acworth Police Chief Sworn In

The new Acworth Police Chief Wayne Dennard credits family, faith for his successes.

Moments that bring together an entire community are hard to come by these days. Weddings, funerals and graduations, however, pale in comparison to the swearing-in ceremony for new Acworth Police Chief Wayne Dennard during the Thursday evening meeting of the Mayor and Board of Aldermen. Multiple ovations were given by the standing-room only crowd at City Hall to both Dennard and outgoing chief Michael Wilkie. Wilkie is leaving the force after almost 10 years to teach at Bob Jones University, a Christian university in Greenville, SC. “I knew I had a tough choice in front of me when Mike told me he was leaving,” said City Manager Brian Bulthuis. “I see from the outpouring of support, though, that I made the right decision.” Local dignitaries …

Police Chief Leaving for Teaching Gig

Wayne Dennard is in line to replace Michael Wilkie as Acworth's chief.

Acworth Police Chief Michael Wilkie is resigning after 9½ years as the city's top cop, the city of Acworth announced late Wednesday. Wilkie is leaving for a teaching position at his alma mater, Bob Jones University, a Christian university in Greenville, SC, according to a statement released by the Acworth Police Department. "Mike has done an outstanding job over the past nine years guiding our police department to become one of the most professional and community-orientated police departments in the state of Georgia," City Manager Brian Bulthuis said. He is more than a police officer he is a community leader. He coached my daughter's soccer team more than 10 years ago and taught her how to love the game. He told a little group of girls back then that more importantly than soccer, he wanted to come watch them when they graduated high school, and we are grateful that he will still be in town for the opportunity to attend her graduation party. …   more ›

Acworth Police Chief Sworn in as GACP Vice President

The Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police (GACP) is an organization that represents Chiefs of Police from across the state.

Acworth Police Chief Michael G. Wilkie was sworn in Tuesday as the fourth Vice President of the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police (GACP). The GACP is an organization that represents Chiefs of Police from all over the state, and is responsible for the training and professional development of the chiefs. Wilkie has held his role as the Chief of Police for the City of Acworth for almost nine years. He served as the police chief for Springdale and Jonesville in South Carolina before joining the City of Acworth Police Department. Wilkie is an Atlanta native and a graduate of Bob Jones University in Greenville, SC. He received a master's degree in criminal justice from the University of South Carolina, a master's degree in public …
