These young men and women are chosen to represent the school and can often be seen welcoming parents and other important guests to the school, part of their official function as ambassadors. The new environmental technology program at Chattahoochee Technical College will begin for fall semester.

A new program being offered this fall at Chattahoochee Technical College’s North Metro campus will prepare students for a field that one instructor says needs more workers. The new Associate of Applied Science Degree in Environmental Technology, which will be the only two-year program in the metro Atlanta area, will train students in environmental law and ethics, field sampling and testing, hydrology, wastewater management and hazardous waste cleanup, among other things. “It’s a growing field,” said Bejie Herrin, the course instructor. “There are a lot of components. It’s a very interesting field.” The field is growing because more and more people are becoming good stewards of the environment, Herrin said. “People have become more aware of…

Cobb JROTC Cadets Honored

More than 700 Cadets from nearly all Cobb County and Marietta high schools participated in the ceremony.

More than 300 people from throughout Cobb County attended a Junior ROTC Pass in Review ceremony Thursday at Campbell High School. More than 700 Cadets from nearly all Cobb County and Marietta high schools participated in the ceremony. Maj. Larry Moyers, the host school’s JROTC instructor, explained that the purpose of a pass in review is to honor the accomplishments of the cadets and the military itself. “It’s a ceremony that’s used to recognize individuals for accomplishments or for a guest commander to review the troops and see what they look like,” he said. “So it’s kind of a combination in honors.” Two students from each school were honored with either the Superintendent’s Award or the Military Officers Association Award. Cobb Schools …

The scholarships didn't come in the form of giant checks, but that doesn’t mean they won’t go to good use. “What an amazing gift on behalf of the Petersons’ son this is,” said Dr. Ron Newcomb, President of Chattahoochee Technical College. “They have sustained this now for eight years through their generosity and support for these students. It is an amazing opportunity for these students to receive these sets of tools.” Alan and Claire Peterson established this scholarship in memory of their son, Michael. Family and friends keep his…

Acworth Students to Launch New 'Georgia Day' with Gov. Nathan Deal

Two Durham Middle students and a teacher will be joining Gov. Nathan Deal for today's launch of Character and History Month.

A teacher and two students from Durham Middle School will join Gov. Nathan Deal as he signs a resolution establishing a new, statewide month of history and character education. Durham Middle School eighth graders Beth Ann Shires and Ryan Mulkey brought the idea of a day honoring the character values and accomplishments of state founder James Oglethorpe to their Georgia History teacher Thomas Panter. The students, along with Panter and Language Arts teacher Mandy Martin, discovered the long-dormant recognition of Georgia Day, established in 1909 to celebrate statehood on Feb. 12 each year. The team from Durham drafted a letter to Senator Steve Thompson, proposing a new concept for Georgia Day that celebrates character and positive choices …
