Acworth Food Scores: Lowest Score Is a 77

The latest inspections by Cobb Public Health include visits to Hong Kong Star, Poblano's Mexican Grill and Wellstar Acworth Health Park Parkside Cafe.

Each item on an inspection form has a point value ranging from 1 to 9 points, with violations deducting points from a best possible score of 100. A sample inspection form is attached. Higher points are taken for items with higher risk to cause illness, while repeat violations take even more points. Letter grades assigned are A for totals of 100 to 90 points, B for 89 to 80, C for 79 to 70, and U for less than 70.

Paddy’s Pub and Eatery has been in business since December 2009. Owner Amber Vlcek used to own several Italian restaurants and is hoping to open more Paddy's in the future. “I named the place after my mom who was born in England and came over after World War II as a war bride,” Vlcek said. “Her dad was from Ireland. I also opened on her birthday.” The menu includes Irish and English recipes and includes a Traditional Irish Breakfast, Homemade Bread Pudding, Corned Beef and Cabbage, Lamb Stew, Fish & Chips, Sausage Rolls and Corned Beef Rolls. Labor Department Targeting Heat Safety

A new free mobile application helps workers and supervisors monitor the heat index at their work sites.

By the U.S. Department of Labor The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration has kicked off a national outreach initiative to educate workers and their employers about the hazards of working outdoors in hot weather. The outreach effort builds on last year’s successful summer campaign to raise awareness about the dangers of too much sun and heat. “For outdoor workers, ‘water, rest and shade’ are three words that can make the difference between life and death,” Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Cobb Small Business of the Year

An area company was recognized during the Cobb Chamber of Commerce First Monday Breakfast.

Kennesaw-based Velociteach was named the 2012 Small Business of the Year by the Cobb Chamber of Commerce and The Atlanta Journal-Constitution at the Chamber’s First Monday Breakfast. According to a release from the Cobb Chamber, the business provides project management fundamentals, communication excellence, risk management and earned value management to companies around the globe. Acworth resident Dianne Murphy is about to open an old-fashioned Christmas gift and candy shop off Marietta Square.

Miss the good old days of homemade fudge, boxed Belgian chocolate, chocolate covered popcorn, lollipops in fun shapes, cotton candy, Zotz, Pixy Stix and Big League Chew? Can't wait for the magic of Christmas to come around again. Well the spirit of Christmas and these nostalgic treats are coming to Marietta Square all year long. The Ye Olde Christmas and Candy Shoppe will open in April at 87 Church Street. "I've always had a dream of opening my own store, but I thought it would be  way in the future. But I just had this epiphany one day and said, 'This is what I want to be doing, and this is what I'm going to do,'" owner Dianne Murphy, of Acworth, said. Nominate Cobb's Best Small Businesses

There are only two days left to nominate this year's top businesses in Cobb County.

The Cobb Chamber of Commerce is accepting nominations until Wednesday, Jan. 18 for Cobb's Top 25 Small Businesses of the Year. The 2012 Small Business of the Year will be selected from those 25 best businesses. Business owners can nominate themselves or other businesses. Nominated companies must: Which Acworth businesses deserve to be Cobb's top small businesses in your opinion? Tell us in the comments.
