Patch, Starbucks Team to Avert Fiscal Cliff

The two companies have joined forces to urge Congress to “Come Together” before tax hikes and spending cuts push America over the “fiscal cliff.”

On any given day, Metro Atlanta and Washington, D.C., might seem like they’re a million miles apart. Today is not one of those days. As Congress and President Barack Obama attempt to hash out differences to stop America from falling over the “Fiscal Cliff,” Patch and Starbucks are teaming up to urge Republicans and Democrats to “come together.” The two companies are working together to make sure Congress gets the message America wants a viable solution to the country’s financial woes. The so-called Fiscal Cliff encompasses all of the budget cuts and tax hikes that will automatically kick in if Congress doesn’t take action before Jan. 1, 2013. Some economists say the automatic changes will push the country into another recession. The White …

Nice sentiment and I hope it will work, but I am not at all convinced that it will do any good. http://www.schoolanduniversity.com/ Our politics and our Congress have entrenched themselves in their respective ideologies and are, at this point, refusing to budge. Compromise has become a dirty word in Washington, D.C. and all the nice sentiments on every coffee cup in every Starbucks in the country…   more ›

What is this new coffee anyway? The Washington Post has chronicled the history of the Geisha heritage varietal, the bean from which the Costa Rica Finca Palmilera is made. The bean, which has its roots in Ethiopia, has gained …

Memories of Life In a Small Town

You know you're from a small town if you have to name surrounding cities to convince people that your hometown exists.

There is a new group on Facebook called "you're probably from 'any small town' if you remember…” followed by individual posts of a recollection of growing up in that small town. My small town happens to be Tarboro, North Carolina (in 1980 the estimated population was 8,741). It is one of those small towns that always get responses like "where’s that" as though it doesn’t exist. You then find yourself naming all the nearest major cities until they excitedly exclaim “oh!” like they now know what you’re talking about.  I think we all fondly recall our youth no matter the town, whether we left it or not and even if those growing up years had its share of bumps on the road. This recent trip down memory lane has me wondering what my kids will …
