A handful of Acworth residents spoke out against the incorporation of Cobb County property inside the existing city limits. Share your thoughts with the community.
Should any city, including Acworth, have the ability to annex property, despite the landowner's opposition? Although it disagreed with a handful of residents in doing so, the city's Board of Aldermen said yes Thursday to annexing "islands of land" governed by Cobb County, but within Acworth's existing city limits, The Marietta Daily Journal reported. City officials said the pockets of Cobb property west of Main Street along and between New McEver and Hickory Grove roads confused emergency responders and road crews. But seven land owners spoke out in opposition, citing another level of government that could make future property demands on them and the addition of city property taxes, according to the newspaper. Acworth annexed parcels in …

Acworth has not been asked to contribute to Cobb County's new economic development initiative, the mayor says during Thursday's Board of Aldermen meeting.
Acworth troops of the Girl Scouts of America were recognized in honor of the organization's 100th anniversary during the regular meeting of the Board of Aldermen of the city of Acworth on Thursday night. Daisies, Brownies and Juniors from Troops 12437, 2609 and 2376 received a proclamation from Mayor Tommy Allegood that recognized not only the worldwide impact of 10 million Girl Scouts in 145 countries, but also the good works of local Scouts. Girl Scouts have been instrumental in Lake Allatoona cleanup efforts, and Allegood said a photo of him with the Scouts is one of his favorites. “Thanks for making a difference and coming out to the lake cleanup,” Allegood said. “That's something that really helps keep our lake and our water very …

Three aldermen and two judges were sworn in by the city attorney and mayor.
Three aldermen and two court judges were sworn in during a largely ceremonial first 2012 meeting of the City of Acworth Mayor and the Board of Aldermen. Aldermen Butch Price, Gene Pugliese and Bob Weatherford, joined by family members, were sworn in by Acworth City Attorney Douglas Haynie. Each alderman brought a Bible from home that a family member held for them as they swore their oaths. “I look forward to serving you for another four years,” said Weatherford, who defeated zoning board member Brett North in last November's general election. “We've got a lot of things we've started that I look forward to seeing to to fruition.” The other aldermen reiterated the strong team attitude that resonates between them and their respective staffs. …

An independent accounting firm completed an audit of the city's finances and found everything to be in order.
The Mayor and Board of Aldermen of the City of Acworth got some exciting news about the growing state of the city's coffers during their regular meeting Thursday evening. Tammy Galvis, a Certified Public Accountant with the firm of Moore and Cubbedge presented the findings of their audit of the city's finances, including the general fund and power fund. According to the city's accounts, which were vetted by the independent auditors, the general fund grew by $264,000 during the previous fiscal year. Originally, city budgets had anticipated drawing money out of the previous year's general fund balance to cover expenses, but this revenue over expenditure eliminated that risk. In addition, the city's power fund saw its revenues increase 11 …

Singleton Orthodontics contributes $6,000 to help purchase the new police dog, Uno, for the City of Acworth Police Department.
The Mayor and Board of Aldermen of the City of Acworth received special news from Acworth Police Chief Michael Wilkie and passed a seven-item consent agenda at their Thursday evening meeting. A half-dozen Kennesaw State University students were in the audience, which will earn them extra credit in their political science class. Also in council chambers was Wilike, who announced to the Mayor and board that Singleton Orthodontics had fronted half of the $12,000 needed to purchase the new police dog, Uno. The other half of the money needed to purchase and train Uno came from drug asset seizures. “Singleton Orthodontics told us they wanted to pay for something expensive to show their appreciation for us,” Wilkie said. “Now I want to share my …

The City of Acworth Mayor and Board of Aldermen praised the efforts of the fundraising committees and the generosity of the citizenry.
The Mayor and Board of Aldermen of the City of Acworth made five presentations to organizations involved with a recent fundraiser and recognized Breast Cancer Awareness Month at their meeting Thursday evening. The “Covering the Bases” fundraising event helped the city's Horizon Field and Horizon League, a sports complex and sports league built with special needs children in mind (here's an example of the impact the field has had). The Acworth Police Department has been the chief fundraisers for the event, which has gone on for four years. This year's fundraiser lasted a full 24 hours (Sept. 24–25), and included people walking the bases of Horizon Field for the duration of the event. In addition, the “Ride for the Horizon” and “Shoot for …

Although Acworth is Cobb's fastest growing city, Mayor Tommy Allegood and his staff aren't done improving the city's "Quality of Life."
Mayor Tommy Allegood shared his plans for a booming Acworth during a town hall presentation at the City Hall Wednesday evening. Meeting Room One was full of interested citizens, including representatives of several homeowners' associations, who arrived in advance of Allegood's PowerPoint presentation. In addition, many city aldermen and the heads of various city departments were in attendance. The department heads all had tables set up along the walls of the meeting room, allowing for citizens to interact with the city employees directly and ask questions they may have. “It gets citizens involved,” said City Treasurer Sharron Burtz. “The HOA people here can relate what they saw to their members. Being out here helps put a face to the voice…

The six new cars and trucks will cost around $230,000.
The City of Acworth Police Department will be getting six new vehicles to assist their war on crime, a result of the passage of the consent agenda at the Mayor and Board of Aldermen meeting Thursday evening. Roughly $230,000 will be spent to acquire and outfit four Chevrolet Caprice patrol vehicles and two Chevrolet Equinox vehicles for the Criminal Investigation Division. Police Chief Michael Wilkie said he expected to call Day's Chevrolet at 8 a.m. Friday to enter the order. “The Criminal Investigations guys are really excited,” said Wilkie. “In most police departments, that group gets the hand me down vehicles.” Wilkie went on to say that the division had been getting by using older vehicles, but expected that the new Equinoxes would …
