Get more done on weekends and still have fun!
It never fails. Every Sunday night around 7 or 8 o’ clock, I ask myself where the weekend went. Then I usually think to myself, if I were the President of the United States, I would make every weekend a three-day weekend. Frankly two days never seem to be enough. Monday morning always seems to come no matter how much I fight it, and because none of the potential 2012 presidential candidates has shortening the work week on their agendas, I have had to come up with ways to make the most out of my weekend. Don’t save everything for the weekend. This is also called procrastinating. That is my go-to excuse when I don’t want to stay up that extra hour or two during the week. The problem is those things add up to a pile of things on your precious…

Here are some test taking tips you make have forgotten during the summer.
Whether you like it or not, it’s about that time. The first round of exams is upon you or quickly approaching. Take it seriously. You may be tempted to blow it off because it is the first exam, but in many cases you may only have one or two more chances to earn you grade in the course. One poor exam grade can really hurt your chances of getting a good grade. Ask questions. If you are at all unsure about the format of the exam, ask. I’m pretty sure that your professors are trying to trick you. It’s a novel idea, but they actually want their students to do well. Read your syllabus. The syllabus should outline the objectives of the course and that will give you a good guide on the topics you should focus on as you study. Start studying early…

The first few weeks of the semester can set the tone for the rest of the year.
Get to class on time. You know that saying “early is on time and on time is late?” Well, in this case it’s true, because the people who walk in right as class is about to start get slim pickings for seating options. Also, you should always avoid unnecessary interruptions or disruptions by walking in late. Sit in the front of the classroom. You will be better engaged in what the teacher is saying. Leave the laptop in your room or in your bag. I usually do this for the first couple of class periods. It helps me pay attention to the instructor and I get to feel out whether I will need it for note taking. Speak. If you’ve ever given any type of presentation you know that it can be very unnerving to hear yourself talk. So, if your teacher asks…

There's no reason your second year should be any less great than your first.
Going back to college for your second year is an experience all on its own. Believe it or not you will have confidence that you did not have before. Campus will seem a little smaller and you won’t be completely at lost at every turn. You may hear the expression sophomore slump thrown around a lot especially when there is talk of an artist whose second album does not meet the expectations or standards of their debut release. This can happen to college students who have had successful during their freshman year. I know after my first few months of college, I thought to myself, “Well, this isn’t that hard.” College had always seemed like a daunting challenge. Now you know that you can do it, so sometimes it’s easy to slack off a bit. You may …

Start a new school year with a new you.
I’ve been in school for a long time and I still get nervous on the first day. I always lie awake in bed the night before unable to fall asleep and feeling a mixture of anxiousness and excitement. I have passed physically setting out my outfit that I’m going to wear the next day, but I still spend a decent amount of time planning it out in my head. I approach the beginning of a new school year the same way I approach the beginning of new calendar year. I take the time to reflect on all the things that happened this past year and all exciting things to look forward to this year. If it’s your first year at a new school, you’ll probably need the map, so just take. So what if you look lost or awkward? Own it. The “I didn’t know. I’m a freshman…

It's almost as good as the holiday season, right?
I imagine if you’re a parent, you probably hate back-to-school season. The mere thought of the increase in traffic on the first day of school is enough to give anyone a headache. You have to psych yourself up to take one or more of your children into the madness that is a Wal-mart, or Target for school supplies. There you will most likely find book bags, pencils, pouches to put them in, and folders littered all over the isle as if animals stampeded because they couldn’t find the blue, retractable pens. Usually, stores like Office Max or Staples are a lot calmer, but you end up paying for that little bit of serenity at the register. As a kid, I loved back-to-school shopping! Are you kidding? I would go to the store and buy the largest box …

A few things you should do before summer vacation comes to an end.
Excuse me while I have a mild panic attack. It’s the end of July, which means it’s almost August. Where did the time go? Where did summer vacation go? When school first let out, summer seemed to be a long chuck of time with endless possibilities. Now there’s a quantifiable amount of time left. Whether it be one, two, or three weeks, make sure to get these last few summertime activities in before it’s too late. 1. Watch a firework show. If you missed the fireworks during the rainy Fourth of July we had, you can always catch some at a Friday night Braves home game. 2. Have ice cream. Even though I’m not an ice cream lover, I still have it a couple times during the summer months. It’s a summertime staple. Mix things up and try a new flavor. 3…

Time certainly flies when you're having fun!
It’s the summer before senior year. You’ve almost made it. Now is the time you celebrate all your accomplishments throughout your high school career as well as figure out what you will be doing with you future. My little, excuse me, younger, brother is a rising high school senior. He hasn’t shown any signs of a freak out, but if you aren’t as cool as him you may need a little help figuring out what you are supposed to be doing. It can be an awkward time, because outside of lying by the pool and going to the movies, you feel like you should be doing something. You just aren’t sure what. Plan to visit the guidance office. See if you make an appointment before the end of the summer. Warning: they will be busy during the tail end of the summer…

Why not pick up a good habit or two before school starts?
Depending on when your semester starts, we are all roughly halfway through summer vacation. Soon, you will be moving back to campus residence halls or apartments. The hustle and bustle of college life will take over once again. You will be swept up by sporting events, homework assignments, and reunions with friends. It’s no surprise that college is challenging for students, but there are some habits you can practice during the summer to ensure that you have it down when you get back to school. Eat well. I know one excuse I use when I make poor dietary choices is that I am too busy. I don’t have enough time to make a healthy meal, so it’s easier to grab fast food. Now that you have the extra minutes in the day, use them to make better food …

Disclaimer: this is not an actual diet. These are just a few healthy eating tips that you can use to help you slim down and save money before Spring Break.
The first day of spring is a little over two weeks away, which means for many of you Spring break is right around the corner. I work at the student recreation complex, so if I did not know by the date on the calendar, I sure could tell by the recent influx of students coming in to workout. You may have slipped on the New Year’s resolution to get in shape, but now break is a month or less away and you want to look good in your swim suit while you are vacationing in Panama city or whatever sunny destination is popular this year. Eating in the dining hall can be a real challenge. Hamburgers, fries, and other good fatty foods are just there for the taking. It is okay to eat these foods sparingly, but make sure you eat your veggies. If you …

To: Simone Frances (writer of this article). . . ~ Good story subject, however, there are a few spelling and/or word errors, one of which - 'changes' the whole meaning and understanding of the sentence. Your problem sentence is as follows: "Prepare for and take the ACT/SAT if you haven’t done that already. You will need to have your schools sent to the schools your applying to." ~ Do you see the …   more ›
