In a high-scoring semifinal contest, Lovejoy bested North Cobb High.
North Cobb High School Friday night fell just short of advancing to its first state title game in more than 50 years. In a high-scoring Class AAAAAA contest, Lovejoy bested North Cobb 63-42. It was a record-setting season for the Warriors. North Cobb had not won a postseason game since 1979. This year, the Warriors made it all the way to the semifinals after victories over Valdosta, Hughes and Mill Creek. Lovejoy will take on Norcross High, which will make its first state championship appearance after Friday's 41-27 victory over Colquitt County. Allatoona loses to Whitewater in quarterfinals.
The 11-1 Allatoona Buccaneers were once again the road team as they visited the 11-1 Whitewater Wildcats in Fayetteville on Friday night. The Bucs were a favorite to win the game after a stunning upset of the M.L. King Lions last week. Being the favorite didn't guarantee a victory. Two turnovers and an interception by the Buccaneers gave the Wildcats all the opportunities they would need to to outscore the Bucs 24-3. The Wildcats ground game, anchored by running backs Christian Walford (7) and Kendall Conley (25) would use a lot of time off the clock, limiting Allatoona's opportunities to score and the Whitewater defense also limited the Buccaneers ground game.
