Runoff Election for Acworth Alderman Underway

Two men with close ties to the city are vying to replace Bob Weatherford on the Acworth Board of Aldermen.

Polls have been open since 7 a.m. Tuesday for Acworth voters to decide who will succeed Bob Weatherford as the city's Post 3 alderman.

The two candidates for the position, Brett North and Kevin Wigington, have run a clean campaign without any sort of smear tactics that one might expect to see in the modern political environment.

North spent nine years on the city's planning and zoning board, and currently serves as the outpatient clinic manager at Life University. Wigington is the secretary-treasurer of the Acworth Historic Preservation Commission and operates the Brookwood Christian School.

As for Weatherford, he is attempting to become the newest Cobb County Commissioner by defeating Bill Byrne for the District 1 Commissioner's seat. That runoff election is also underway Tuesday. Former District 1 Commissioner Helen Goreham is retiring, opening her seat up to the two challengers.

Please refer to your voter ID card to determine where you should report to cast a ballot Tuesday. It should be the same location where you voted for President in 2012.

Patch will keep tabs on Tuesday's election and update the winners and losers of the Acworth alderman and Cobb Commissioner runoff elections.
