5 Things: Camp Acworth Registration, 'Human Fly'

Here are the things you need to know before heading out the door on May 26.

1 . Weather. There is a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms today, with partly sunny skies and a high temp near 86 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. South wind is between 5 and 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. The NWS predicts new rainfall amount to be between a tenth and quarter of an inch, with higher amount possible during thunderstorms. Thursday night is expected to be mostly cloudy, with a low temp around 60 degrees and southwest wind between 5 and 10 mph.

2. In case you missed it. : On Sunday evening, 49 tornadoes formed when warm and cold fronts came together in the middle of the United States, The New York Times reports. One of those tornadoes severely damaged Joplin, MO, leaving more than 100 dead and many more missing. Read more on how you can help the tornado victims.

: All 8,000-plus athletes at Cobb County high schools will receive preseason brain tests next school year to measure their recovery in the event of a concussion. WellStar Health System is paying for the testing at a cost of almost $10,000, the company said in a news release Tuesday.

3. Happening. Camp Acworth Summer Day Camp: Registration is available for Camp Acworth's Summer Day Camp. Campers will enjoy various outdoor activities including swimming, canoeing, hiking and archery as well as arts and crafts and team sport activities.They will also take a field trip each week to exciting places like
Stars and Strikes, Fernbank Science Center, Zoo Atlanta and the World of Coca-Cola. The camp consists of eight, one-week sessions beginning the week of June 6 and concluding the week of August 5 (there is no camp the week of July 4). Normal camp hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Registration for Camp Acworth and Middle School Camp is going on now and there
are still a limited number of spots available. The registration fee for City of Acworth

5. What about May 26. On May 26, 1977, George Willig, a mountain climber known as "the human fly" or "the spiderman", climed the South Tower of the World Trade Center in New York City. He attached himself to the window washer mechanism and walked straight up until falling into police custody when he reached the top. It took Willig 3.5 hours to make the climb, and $1.10 in finesβ€”a penny per floor. One year later on the same day, the first legal casino to be operated in the United States outside of Nevada was opened in Atlantic City.
