5 Things: Eventful Weekend, Chance of Rain

Here are the things you need to know before heading out the door on May 13.

1. Weather. There is a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 8 a.m. with the rest of the day expectd to be partly sunny, according to the National Weather Service. High temperature is near 85 degres with calm wind around 5 mph. The NWS predicts a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms during the night, with mostly cloudy skies and a low temp around 59 degrees. Precipitation is also in the forecast for this weekend.

: The Allatoona Buccaneers lost to No. 1 ranked St. Pius 10-0 in the Class AAA semifinals Wednesday. Allatoona Coach Bill Perry said St. Pius is the team to beat, and the Bucs will have to raise the bar next year. Despite the score line, Perry felt his third-year program has laid the foundation for a strong future.

3. Happening now. Ride to the Horizon: A motorcylcle ride benefiting "Covering the Bases" fundraiser for the special needs Horizon Field will take place Saturday. Registration is available on the day of the event. Check in and Line up starts at 8:30. Ride begins at Freedom Power Sports at 3102 Cobb Pkwy, Kennesaw and ends at Horizon Special Need Field at 4000 S. Main St, Acworth. Cost of ride entry is $25 per bike, $35 for double. Acworth Opry: The Acworth Opry at Logan Farm Park will take place the second Saturday of each month beginning in May and running through October. The first concert will take place Saturday, with Highway 41 Band taking the stage at 5:30 p.m., followed by Luther's Mountain Band's performance at 6:45 p.m. Bring your family, friends and chairs or blankets and enjoy great Bluegrass music, good food, friendly folks and lots of fun.Β

Waterski Open: The Atlanta Water Ski Club (AWSC) is holding their Fourth Annual Jay Guarino Memorial Acworth Open. Event dates are May 14-15. This is a Class C, three event water-ski competition for all ages. The tournament represents Slalom Skiing, Trick Skiing and Jump Skiing as sanctioned by USA Waterski. Competition begins at 8 a.m. Bring your lawn chairs, sunscreen and tents to enjoy a weekend of waterskiing. There will be food concessions and the kids can burn off some energy at the beach and playground. For more information, visit www.awsc.net for details.

5. What about May 13. On May 13, 184, the United States officially declared war on Mexico. On this day in 1981, Pope John Paul II was shot and wounded by Mehmet Ali Agca as he drove through a crowd in St. Peter's Square, Rome.
