Tsunami Victims Need Your Help

Here are the things you should know before heading out the door April 12.

1. Weather. Showers and thunderstorms are likely before 8 a.m., and a slight chance of showers between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. The rest of the day is expected to be gradually become sunny, with a high near 68. West wind is between 10 and 20 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. Going into tonight, it will be mostly clear, with a low around 42.

2. In case you missed it.

A large crowd of people cheered and waved their flags as Marine Cpl. Todd Love’s plane landed at McCollum Airport in Kennesaw Saturday afternoon. Many burst into tears as they hugged their hero. Love is an Acworth native and a Recon Marine, who lost both legs and his left arm from an IED explosion in October 2010.

Family, friends, local law enforcement and military support groups escorted Love through the downtown areas of Kennesaw and Acworth to , where the homecoming ceremony was held. Another crowd of more than 300 people waited for their hero’s arrival at the park by Lake Allatoona.

3. Happening now. PTSA announced that the Allatoona chapter of the National Honor Society will be collecting donations for the American Red Cross. These donations will benefit earthquake and tsunami relief in Japan. "Generosity for Japan" will be collecting donations during lunch periods on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from April 11-29. Please help the NHS in this effort to aid Japan in this time of immense need. Please look for the "Generosity for Japan" buckets at lunch and in the counseling office. Parents are also invited to participate in this fundraiser. Loose change, dollar bills, checks are all accepted.

5. What about April 12. On April 12, 1945, President Franklin Roosevelt passed away. On the same date in 1981, the first space shuttle, Columbia, took its first test flight.
